Jo'an Parke After numerous years of teaching and the last 15 years or so as an Educational Consultant/Tutor, focusing on those with special learning needs, I took the opportunity to do my training as an Art Therapist. It is exciting to be able to combine my interest in people and my love of art so I can work in the field of Art Therapy! It is important, too, to have experienced first hand the value of this form of psychotherapy. During the Master’s course at Edith Cowan University the training involved spending a year participating in an Art Therapy group – an amazing experience!
What is Art Therapy?
Art Therapy is a form of therapy that incorporates art, imagination, and image-making using a variety of materials. These can include such things as paper, crayons, paints, inks, clay, and all sorts of interesting collage materials! Clients are encouraged to think about/reflect on the images they make and this process helps to give rise to understanding and personal insights. It is a particularly useful way of expressing such things as emotions and anxieties when the client has difficulty verbalising their concerns.
Just as it can be a way of exploring issues that are considered to be ‘problems’, Art Therapy is also an avenue for looking at openings for positive forward movement. There are often times when a client’s inner dreams and longings are reflected and can be identified and aimed for.
Although Art Therapy often attracts those with an interest in art, you DO NOT HAVE TO BE ‘GOOD’ AT DRAWING to participate and gain from this process. Many clients are amazed at their images and there is absolutely no pressure to make works of art – in fact sometimes images are made, for example, by just scribbling or dribbling and flicking paints or inks. I am often fascinated to see how, when given the opportunity, clients can unfold the story in their work and go on to express themselves through images and dialogue with increasing insight.
Who can benefit from Art Therapy?
Art Therapy is a valuable tool to use with individuals and groups and is appropriate for working with a broad range of psychological and emotional problems. It works well with children, adolescents and adults. Art Therapy is also a powerful way of working with those experiencing less pronounced stress but who are seeking direction in their lives. Clients have found it to be a therapeutic outlet as well as a strategy for dealing with emotions such as anger, frustration and high anxiety levels. Those with depression have given me valuable feedback about how Art Therapy has assisted them and it has been especially helpful for people with conditions such as Attention Deficit Disorder, Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism.
I work from the Bentley Family Therapy Centre at 9 Mills Street, Bentley, mostly with clients on a one to one basis but I am also happy to work with small groups
If you would like further information about Art Therapy, or to make an appointment, please contact me on 0410 667696. If you leave a message I will return your call as soon as possible.

Juanita Miller BerryJuanita Miller-Berry is an experienced psychologist who treats both children and adults, particularly those suffering from drug addiction or the aftermath of childhood trauma such as sexual abuse, violence, institutional abuse or multiple placements as children. Trained in the US, she is currently the only qualified practitioner in WA in the attachment therapies of Theraplay® (see box) and Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy or DDP (info at www.danielahughes.homestead.com). Both methods are used to build or rebuild the bond between a child and their caregiver which may have been damaged by such events as divorce, illness, prolonged separation or trauma. Juanita thus sees foster and adopted children with their carers, children diagnosed with ADHD or on the autistic spectrum, as well as those displaying anxiety, depression, behaviour or adjustment problems. She has received training also in EMDR, hypnotherapy, psychodrama and NLP, along with the more common psychological methods of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Interpersonal Therapy and utilises these methods with adults or children as required. She is licenced to provide supervision to other professionals in both Theraplay and DDP.
Theraplay® is a short-term attachment-based therapy for children and their caregivers which aims to enhance self-esteem, trust in others and joyful engagement. It is based on the natural patterns of interaction between parent and child and is personal, physical and fun. Theraplay interactions focus on four essential qualities found in healthy parent-child relationships: Structure, Nurture, Engagement and Challenge. Theraplay sessions create an active and affective connection between the child and the parent/carer, resulting in a changed view of the self as worthy and lovable and of relationships as positive or rewarding. It is best suited for children from birth to twelve. With older children it is combined with Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy or DDP (visit www.danielahughes.homestead.com) and is termed Integrative Attachment Therapy. For further information on Theraplay visit www.theraplay.org.
A former state school teacher and trained youth worker, Juanita worked for many years in high school, remedial education and at TAFE as senior lecturer in the field of school aged child care. From 1981-90 she served on both national and international committees re children's rights, and was Australian delegate to a UN-affiliated committee in 1988.
As a Clinical Psychologist (Registrar) Juanita worked at: the Incest Survivors Association, SARC, a Mental Health Clinic, the Department for Child Protection, and at two adult drug rehabilitation centres in W.A. She is currently completing a professional doctorate in clinical psychology on the relation of emotion regulation capacities to the management of stress and chronic pain.
